•Avatar: The New Frontier of Cinema

29 Jan

After weeks of waiting and anticipating, I finally saw Avatar in 3D IMAX…

I was completely blown away. The image quality, the music and the 3D experience all combined to immerse me in the world of Pandora. Granted the storyline isn’t oscar-worthy, but the sights and sounds in the film were well worth the 1-hour wait outside the theater.  (Yes, although we bought the tickets 3 days before showing, we still had to wait another hour outside the theater like newbies.)

Highlights:

  • Jake Sully’s avatar encountering Pandora’s forests at night for the first time.  Let’s just say, he doesn’t need any light to enjoy the beauty of the scenary…
  • Jake Sully’s avatar flicking away little atokirina (airborne jelly-fish-like seeds of the “holy tree”) that try to land on his body
  • The Na’vi people riding the ikran (dragon-like animal that only bonds to one rider in its lifetime)
  • “I see you…”
  • Colonel Miles Quaritch geting lit on fire, and yet he continues on his rampage, only to put out the flames 5 minutes after… THAT’S BALLER!

All-in-all, the movie wasn’t just an experience for the eyes, it was also an experience for the mind.  The idea of a completely different world, with creatures that seemed both medieval and futuristic, seemed hard to accept at first, but once you’ve been immersed in this new world for more than 10 minutes, you begin to see it as reality.  And then, the 3D part of the film makes the experience that much more realistic.  I truly believe that Avatar is at the forefront of Cinema… and I cannot wait to see what films come next!

Great websites for you Avatar-enthusiasts!

•Reflections 1/15/10: 3 Things That Irk Me in NYC

15 Jan

Okay, I love NYC, but there are some things that just peeves the shit out of me.  Here are 3 that I encountered this week:

1. Rushed feeling. Everyone walks fast, talks fast, eats fast, does everything fast in NYC.  I feel rushed regardless of what I’m doing.  I could be walking home from work with no plan and I would rush to the subway, etc.  I’ve had friends who visited from Cali comment on my ridiculous “need for speed”… It’s definitely a NYC phenomenon because I used to be very laid-back and relaxed all the time.

2. Pushy rude people. This morning, as I was walking up the stairs some random lady pushed me into oncoming foot traffic for no reason at all!  I was walking fairly fast next to her, but I wasn’t in her personal space, so I have no idea why should pushed me.  She didn’t apologize.  She didn’t say excuse me.  She just reach out her arm and pushed me hard against people walking down the stairs. I was in shock. Who does that these days?  I had to say “Excuse me” and “I’m sorry” to the people I bumped into because of her.  And, it wasn’t like she was in a rush either.  She was just an angry woman that somehow found my walking faster than her annoying.  There are mnay rude people like her in NYC… all you can do is shrug it off… unless I pull a Ronnie.

Pulling a "Ronnie"

Pulling a "Ronnie" (aka, knocking somone out cold!)

3. Extremey expensive movie tickets. I really want to watch Avatar 3D in IMAX and I have to pay $20+ for a ticket.  Normal tickets are also expensive (~$15).  I remember back in the days when I saw movies with a student discount of $7 or matinee for $5.  Those things don’t exist in Manhattan.  You have to pay a premium on everything!
